So Why Did I Create a Blog?

I think that the Mini Microsoft Blog is a great thing, and it really provides a great picture about Microsoft. However, I find the blog oriented towards folks up at corporate and I wanted to bring a view of the average Microsoft foot soldier in the field. This is my view and my perspective, I'm sure some will disagree with me, but I feel that I have a responsibility to my own conscious and I have to look at myself in the mirror every morning.

I'm a Microsoft field sales employee - I have always been in the field and have never held a position in Redmond, so my view of the world is very different than folks up in Redmond. I talk to customers everyday. I hear the platitudes of our executives. We've come a long way - from Ballmer pitching Windows (with REAL Genuine excitement) to hearing some tear jerker emotionally manipulative story told by Kevin Turner. It's like the commercial - where do you want to go today? I felt like we got suckered into Walmart.

My committment is to tell it like it is from a sales reps perspective. You might think I really dislike working for Microsoft. I writing because I care about this company and see how hard we work in the field. The things that I see from our executives betray the values that are often quoted as Microsoft Competencies. Well it's been a long day, but there is much to write about and you'll hear more in the entries to come.

Welcome.

The voice of the field is important and I look forward to the stories you can share and the conversations that will surely spring up here. You have a perspective that I don't and one that I'm sure I can learn even more about Microsoft from.

A comment posted over on my blog:

Please tell Field Agent that the Microsoft in the Field blog should allow anonymous comments. There are tons of folks in the field talking about minimsft and wishing there was a forum more geared towards the field.

I'd give it a try. Enjoy! Oh, and be careful! 8-)

The voice of the field is a little tiny squeak in a raucous cacophony of white noise. When I was a softie one of the hardest things was getting information from the people who had it (HQ) to the people who needed it (customer).

You'd think there should be a bat-phone for that sort of thing.

As a field employee, I find it interesting to hear comments from MS employees who came from other tech companies, vs. employees that started with MS straight from college (or were at MS during the go-go 90's).

Generally, I find that employees coming from other tech companies realize MS is a good company, still with plenty potential. I find most of the field falls in this category.

On the other hand, employees that have never worked anywhere else seem to be the complainers. They have no idea how worse off other tech companies are. It seems like there are many of these types in Redmond.

They need a taste of the real life -- outside of the ivory palace. Try another country to REALLY understand what I'm talking about.

Dude! Almost 2 weeks with no posting?! I was hoping that this would be more up-to-date...but, then again, I was a softie in the field once so I know the bandwidth constraints.

Oh well, it looked like it was going to be good...

There is a lot to be said. The problem is that anyone that knows you will know who wrote it. We need blog-by-proxy.

I agree that we have it pretty good. I also agree that things could be improved.

As a big MSFT customer, I look forward to hearing this. I've told my account team for years (since Scoble started) that blogs have been the best thing to come out of MSFT.
